Meet Acclaimed Local Artist, Wilbur Niewald, During This Solo Exhibition
In the Studio with Wilbur Niewald is a career-spanning solo exhibition by Wilbur Niewald, professor emeritus of painting at Kansas City Art Institute. From early abstractions, to his later dedication to painting only from direct observation, In the Studio surveys Wilbur Niewald’s nearly 70-year painting career. The exhibition encompasses paintings from the 1950s to the present, with works from the museum’s collection, as well as private and the artist’s personal collections.
The paintings of Wilbur Niewald have a deep and persistent connection to his lifetime home of Kansas City, and in a larger sense, to the history of painting itself. After developing a unique abstract language for his paintings in the fifties and sixties, Niewald began to paint in the representational style in 1970, and has continued exclusively in that vein in the decades since. His timeless still lifes, studio portraits, and landscapes are invariably executed through direct observation in a persistent endeavor to render familiar scenes with new clarity through repetition.
A native Kansas Citian and professor emeritus at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Nelson-Atkins is honored to present canonical works of this beloved artist. In the Studio will be installed within the Bloch Galleries, adjacent to works by artists who heavily influenced Niewald’s subjects and styles.
On Sunday, October 21st, meet Wilbur and hear his stories firsthand when the artist guides a talk and gallery tour. This remarkable event is free to attend and open to the public.
