Experience Delightful Slavic Food and Music at the Sugar Creek Slavic Festival
The Sugar Creek Slavic Festival is preparing for its 33rd annual event on June 8-9.
This year the festival celebrates all the Slavic nationalities that make us One Big Family. The festival celebrates the historic roots of the Slavic immigrants from Slovakia, Croatia, Poland, Slovenia, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia who helped settle Sugar Creek and other communities in the Kansas City area.
Kansas City-based Kolograd returns to the festival to play a mix of Eastern European folk and kolos. Also featured will be the Sugar Creek Ethnic Dance Troupe, Tamburitzans, Kolo Kids, village musicians and more. The annual sausage eating contest offers contestants the chance to compete for the title of Kielbasa King or Queen.
There will be a variety of Slavic foods available throughout the weekend. This includes traditional dishes and festival favorites, such as sarma (cabbage rolls), haluski (fried cabbage and noodles), roznijica (pork kabob) and kielbasa (Polish sausage). Visitors can feast on povitica, kolache, strudel or a number of other traditional Slavic baked goods.
Visitors can also view an exhibit of Slavic artifacts and enjoy a Kids Zone for the youngsters.
At Waterside Residences on Quivira, the premier apartments in Lenexa, Kansas, it is clear that we have it all, but we still feel obliged to inform you of all the events our community has scheduled. Please feel free to join in all of the fun at this event!
